Two sides of the Calder: Brighouse and Rastrick
Brighouse grew up where the Calder could be crossed, and the river still splits the area in two. The town centre, with its canal basin and bus station, lies on the north bank. Rastrick climbs the hill on the other side, towards St Matthew's Church and Round Hill. Both share the HD6 postcode, and both come under Calderdale Council even though the dialling code is the same as Huddersfield's.
Around them are Hove Edge, Bailiff Bridge and Clifton, with Hipperholme and Lightcliffe a little further out towards Halifax. That spread means Brighouse homes vary a lot: terraced streets close to the centre, large detached houses along some of the main roads, sizeable estates across much of the town, and former mills by the water that have been turned into flats.
What tends to need doing in HD6
Much of what Brighouse homes need is everyday fixing and fitting. Typical lists include a wobbly banister, a kitchen door that won't stay shut, curtain poles to hang in a new extension, a loft hatch to ease, or a picture wall to set out properly. Our general odd-jobs service is built around exactly that sort of mixed list.
Kitchens and bathrooms need attention too. Not full refits, but the small things that make a room feel finished: replacing a cracked tile, changing cupboard handles, resealing round the bath or adjusting a cabinet door that has dropped. The kitchen and bathroom small jobs page lists what that includes and where we draw the line.
Mill flats and town-centre apartments
Several of Brighouse's old mills along the Calder and Hebble Navigation now hold apartments, Mill Royd Mill among them. Flats like these often have their own quirks. Walls may be original brick or stone on one side and studwork on the other, ceilings can be high, and there are usually building rules on drilling hours, deliveries and where a van can stop.
If you live in a converted mill, find out from your managing agent whether contractors need to be notified in advance and whether there's a loading bay we can use. Then tell us which walls you'd like things fixed to. A quick photo of the wall surface and the item to be hung lets us bring the right fixings first time.
Gardens out towards Hove Edge, Clifton and Lightcliffe
Gardens around Brighouse get their full share of Pennine weather. Fences on the exposed side of a house take the full force of the wind, gates drop on their hinges, and shed felt lifts at the corners. We help with repairs like these through our fence, gate and shed repairs, provided the job stays within handyman scope.
Where a fence runs along a boundary, it's worth checking which side is yours to maintain before anything is replaced. We'd also suggest a word with the neighbours if work needs access from their side. Big retaining walls, structural brickwork and anything holding back a bank of earth are for a builder or engineer, and we'll say so if that's what the photos show.
Getting a quote in Brighouse
The simplest route is our online enquiry form. Give us the HD6 or HX3 postcode, a few lines on each task and some clear photos. Close-ups are useful, but so is one wider shot, because it shows us access, the floor below and what's nearby.
We'll come back to you with a price, or with a couple of questions first. Quotes depend on the job and are always confirmed before any work begins, so there's nothing to agree until you've seen the figure. If something on your list needs a gas engineer, an electrician for installation work or a plumber for anything beyond a very minor task, we'll point that out so you can book the right person.

Lets near the M62 and the station
With junction 25 of the M62 on the doorstep and a station on the Calder Valley line that reopened in 2000, Brighouse is well connected, and it has its share of rented homes. Between tenancies the jobs are fairly predictable: touch-up painting, fixing loose handles and hinges, replacing blinds, refitting a bath panel and refixing a loose towel rail. Our rental property maintenance service is set up for that, and photos from your inventory can help us quote without a separate visit.
For old furniture left behind by a tenant, Calderdale Council runs a charged bulky collection for domestic addresses, booked in advance.
Where Brighouse sits in our area
Brighouse is just under 4 miles due north of Huddersfield town centre as the crow flies, so it's well inside the 25-mile straight-line radius we use, which is measured from Market Place, HD1 2AA.
That said, towns don't have neat edges, and we confirm each address individually when we quote rather than assume every road in a listed place is covered. For neighbouring places, take a look at our Elland page or the full list of areas.
