Cleckheaton and the Spen Valley
Cleckheaton sits in the middle of the Spen Valley, named after the River Spen, with Liversedge and Heckmondwike to the south-east and Gomersal and Scholes close by. It was a mill town in the Heavy Woollen District, and by the 1890s it was known as the carding capital of the world, making the wire-toothed card clothing used to prepare wool and other fibres.
The railway that once ran through the valley closed to passengers in 1965. Its old trackbed is now the Spen Valley Greenway, a walking and cycling route between Low Moor and Ravensthorpe. The M62 is about a mile north, at junction 26, Chain Bar.
A Bradford postcode with a Kirklees council
One detail catches people out: Cleckheaton's postcode, BD19, belongs to the Bradford postcode area, but the town is governed by Kirklees Council. BD19 also covers Gomersal and Scholes. Liversedge and Hartshead use WF15, Heckmondwike WF16, and Oakenshaw BD12.
For practical purposes, that means bulky waste collections, tips and planning questions go through Kirklees, not Bradford. Kirklees now runs four household waste recycling centres, the nearest being Weaving Lane in Dewsbury and Emerald Street in Huddersfield. Since the Nab Lane site at Birstall closed, there's no council tip in the Spen Valley itself.
Terraces near the centre, family homes further out
Cleckheaton's housing follows a familiar pattern. Traditional terraces line the streets closest to the town centre. Beyond them are established semi-detached and detached houses, and newer developments sit on the edges of town. Older buildings here are mostly stone, often with stone slate roofs, and Victorian details show up across the town.
The everyday jobs reflect that mix. In the terraces, typical jobs include sticking sash or casement windows, worn door furniture, loose stair rails and the odd patch of damaged plaster. In family homes it's shelves for children's bedrooms, a garden gate that has dropped, or a new desk to be put together. Our handyman and repair service is designed around lists like these, and our flat-pack building page covers furniture specifically.
Gomersal, Red House and the Brontë connection
Neighbouring Gomersal has a small conservation area that includes Red House, Pollard Hall and the Manor House. Red House, built in 1660, appears in Charlotte Brontë's novel Shirley as Briarmains, and it ran as a museum until Kirklees closed it in 2016. The same novel draws on the Luddite attack of 1812 on Rawfolds Mill, here in the Spen Valley.
If you live in or near the conservation area, or your home is listed, external changes such as doors, windows, walls and some tree work may need permission. Check with Kirklees first. We're comfortable working within agreed limits and will suggest a specialist when a job really needs one, for example lime work on old stone.
Kitchens, bathrooms and the bits in between
Not every job is about the outside of a building. Plenty of Cleckheaton jobs are in the smaller rooms: replacing a cracked bathroom tile, fitting a new toilet seat, resealing round a shower tray or swapping kitchen cupboard handles. Our small kitchen and bathroom jobs page explains what's included.
Gardens get their turn too. After a windy spell the usual problems are a fence panel that has blown out, a gate that no longer closes, or a shed door that has come off its hinges. Repairs like these sit under our outdoor repair work, provided the posts and frames are sound enough to fix to. Photos of the whole fence or shed, not just the broken piece, help us judge that.
The limits are firm. Gas appliances, new electrical circuits or sockets and plumbing beyond very minor tasks such as a toilet seat or tap washer go to a properly registered trade. If one of your tasks falls into that category, we'll tell you when we quote so you can book the right person.
Requesting a price
Use our enquiry form to list the jobs and give your BD19 or neighbouring postcode. If you're not sure what the wall is made of, just say so, and a measurement is handy for anything that needs to fit a space.
We'll reply with a quote or a question. Quotes depend on what's involved and are confirmed with you before work starts. Landlords and letting agents can use the same form for rented properties and tell us how they'd like access arranged with tenants. Inspection or check-out notes are a perfectly good starting point.
Cleckheaton's place in our coverage area
Cleckheaton is roughly 6.2 miles north-north-east of Huddersfield town centre in a straight line. Our working area reaches about 25 miles from Market Place, HD1 2AA, measured on the map rather than by road, so the Spen Valley is well covered.
Being named on our list isn't a blanket promise for every house on the town's fringes, so the address is always confirmed against your postcode when we quote. Nearby, there's also a page for Dewsbury.
