A market town on the edge of the moors
Penistone sits on the south bank of the River Don, high in the Pennine foothills, with farmland and dry stone walls all around and open moorland rising to the west. Its market charter dates from 1699, its parish church of St John the Baptist is Grade I listed, and a 29-arch stone viaduct carries the Penistone Line into town. Sheep sales here are older than the charter, and the old Woodhead railway route now forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
At this height the weather can be hard on a house. Wind and driving rain soon find the weak spots in a fence, a gate or a run of sealant, and homes on the more exposed roads tend to take the worst of it.
Stone cottages, farmhouses and newer streets
Around Penistone, and especially in Thurlstone, there are stone houses under stone slate or Welsh slate roofs, including a row of former weavers' houses on Towngate, and several of the listed buildings there have multi-light mullioned windows. Penistone and Thurlstone each have a conservation area, and older farmhouses in the parish, such as Cat Hill, are built of stone too.
Alongside those sit newer estates on the edges of town, including recent housing off Halifax Road. Homes like these need very different help, more about fitting out than repair, so it's worth telling us which kind of property you have when you get in touch.
Older stone houses can have thick walls, deep window reveals and older plaster, all of which affect how things are fixed to them. We'll ask about the wall before agreeing to hang anything heavy, and we'd rather suggest a different spot than drill into something that won't hold.
Jobs the hill-top weather creates
Outside, the common jobs are fence panels that have blown loose, gates that have dropped or won't latch, shed doors that have swollen and exterior woodwork that needs repainting before the next winter. These come under our outdoor repairs, and they're best booked for a settled spell of weather.
Gutters and downpipes take a battering as well. Clearing a blocked gutter on a single-storey extension or refixing a loose downpipe bracket at low level are jobs we can look at, but anything that needs roof access or tall ladders is for a roofer or a contractor with the right equipment.
Inside, draughts are the usual complaint in older stone houses. Door seals, letterbox brushes, gaps along skirting boards and tired sealant round windows and baths are all worth checking before the cold sets in. Our seasonal maintenance help is set up for that kind of list, and it's easier to get through in one visit than piecemeal.
Fitting out a newer Penistone home
If you've moved into one of the newer houses, the list usually starts with curtain poles, blinds, mirrors and shelving, plus a TV bracket, if the wall will take it. Wardrobes, beds, desks and garden storage often arrive flat, and putting furniture together can go on the same quote as everything else.
Plasterboard walls in newer homes need the right fixings for anything heavy, so tell us what's going up and roughly what it weighs. If the walls need a fresh coat once everything is in place, our decorating service can cover single rooms or a whole floor.
Arranging a visit in town or out in the villages
From Huddersfield, the A629 runs south past Shepley towards Penistone, and the Penistone Line railway links the two towns. To get things moving, send a description and photos through the online enquiry form, with your postcode. In the villages, mention anything about access: a steep drive, a narrow lane or a field gate that has to be kept shut.
If you'd like us to bring materials, such as fence panels, sealant or a particular paint colour, say so when you ask. If you've already bought them, tell us what you have so we can check it's right for the job before the day.
Each quote reflects the job described and is confirmed with you before work begins. Gas work, electrical installation and plumbing beyond very minor tasks are left to suitably registered trades, and we'll flag up any item that belongs with one of them.
How Penistone fits our coverage
Penistone is about 10.5 miles south-east of Huddersfield town centre as the crow flies, in the Barnsley district of South Yorkshire. Our area stretches to roughly 25 miles in a straight line from Market Place (HD1 2AA), so the town is comfortably inside it, though it's in the outer band of places we serve. We look at Penistone jobs case by case and may talk about travel when quoting.
Living in or near Penistone doesn't automatically mean your address is covered, and we check every postcode, including those in the more remote moorland hamlets, before agreeing a visit. If you're between Penistone and Huddersfield, villages such as Shepley sit closer still, and our Holmfirth area page covers the Holme Valley side.
