A town where two rivers and two canals meet
Sowerby Bridge sits where the River Ryburn joins the Calder, and where the Rochdale Canal meets the Calder and Hebble Navigation. The old canal basin at the Wharf, with its listed warehouses, is the obvious landmark. Tuel Lane Lock on the Rochdale Canal is often described as the deepest lock in the country.
The town grew around a river crossing, then expanded with textile mills and engineering works in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Much of the older housing is built from local stone, from terraces near the centre to farmhouses and cottages further out. Norland, for example, spreads across the hillsides above the Calder and Ryburn valleys.
Living with the river: damp and flood recovery
The valley floor has flooded badly more than once. The Boxing Day floods of 2015 were described as the worst in the area since 1968, and Storm Ciara brought water into the town again in February 2020. Even homes that stayed dry deal with the damp that comes with a Pennine valley: mould on window reveals, swollen doors and paint that flakes on north-facing walls.
We can help with the lighter side of that. Our painting and decorating covers stain-blocking and repainting walls and ceilings once the cause of any damp has been dealt with. We can also ease doors that have swollen, fit draught strips and renew sealant around baths and sinks. Structural drying, damp-proof courses and electrical checks after a flood belong to specialist trades, and we'll point you in that direction.
Jobs that come up on the hillside streets
Much of Sowerby Bridge is steep, and older stone houses come with their own quirks. Common jobs include:
- rehanging or adjusting gates that drop on a slope
- replacing fence panels after the winter wind
- putting up shelves and brackets on uneven stone or old plaster
- fixing loose stair rails and banisters
- sealing gaps around windows and doors
- tidying paths, steps and small outdoor areas
Much of that falls under our garden and outdoor repairs, while the indoor tasks are part of our general handyman work. If your list is a mixture, put it all in one enquiry.
New furniture is the other common job. Our furniture assembly service covers beds, wardrobes, desks and storage units, including in top-floor flats where every box has had to come up a narrow staircase first.
Up the Ryburn valley to Triangle and Ripponden
The HX6 postcode district stretches well beyond the town itself. It includes Sowerby, Norland, Ripponden and Rishworth, and the A58 runs up the Ryburn valley through Triangle towards Ripponden. Each place has a slightly different character. Norland is a scattered hillside village below Norland Moor, with stone houses dating back to the 1600s. Ripponden has its old packhorse bridge with the listed Old Bridge Inn beside it. Mill Bank, near Triangle, is a conservation area in its own right, and the centre of Sowerby Bridge has had its own conservation area since 1984, taking in streets such as Wharf Street and Town Hall Street.
If your home is in a conservation area, or is a listed building, check with Calderdale Council before changing anything on the outside, such as windows, doors or boundary walls. Indoor jobs are less likely to be affected, but it's worth asking if you're unsure.
Rentals and flats in the town centre
If you let out a terrace or flat in the town or along the valley, this part is for you. For landlords and letting agents, our rental property maintenance covers the usual jobs between tenants or after an inspection: patching and painting walls, replacing worn sealant, sorting cupboard doors and putting up blinds. You can send photos and arrange key access, so you don't need to be there.
When a property needs gas, electrical installation or plumbing work beyond a very minor fix, we pass it to a suitably qualified trade. We'll make that clear when we quote.
Old furniture and the tip at Mearclough
Calderdale Council has a household waste recycling centre on Mearclough Road in Sowerby Bridge. It asks residents to show proof of address, and vans and large trailers need a permit. The council also runs a charged bulky item collection, booked online, though items must be left outside and accessible. If you're swapping old furniture for new, we can dismantle the old pieces first.
Is Sowerby Bridge within our area?
Sowerby Bridge is about 6.7 miles north-west of Huddersfield town centre as the crow flies, comfortably inside our 25-mile straight-line limit from Market Place, HD1 2AA. The surrounding villages are closer still or a similar distance. Even so, outlying farms and moorland lanes around the town aren't all automatically included, so the full postcode is what we check when you get in touch.
Send the job details, your postcode and some photos through our contact form. We'll confirm whether it's something we can take on and agree a price with you before work begins.
